Planning Your Dream Kitchen

A kitchen remodel is a big home improvement project for most homeowners, so it’s important to get it right! Kitchens are not only one of the most utilized rooms in a home, but they also get very high marks for return on investment. In fact, according to Remodeling Magazine's Cost vs. Value Report, kitchen remodels consistently rank among the top home improvement projects for return on investment. Homeowners often recover 60-80% of their investment in a kitchen remodel. To help you get started, we’ve gathered some helpful tips for planning your kitchen renovation.

  • Take inventory of your needs and wants. Then prioritize.

Make a list of your current areas of frustration in your kitchen. Is there poor traffic flow or not enough cabinet storage? Do you prioritize cooking at home and need upgraded appliances? Have you always dreamed of a farmhouse sink? After creating a list of needs and wants, rank them from “must have” to “wish list”.

  • Discuss the dreaded “B” word.

A budget will help you determine the scope of the project and type of materials you will use. Be sure to use your needs list to plan for costs like removing walls, moving plumbing, or additional lighting. It’s also important to consider how long you plan to stay in your home, the location, and resale potential.

  • Seek qualified sub contractors and vendors.

Whether you are working with a general contractor, or doing some of it yourself, you will work with vendors. Seek reputable companies that are insured and experienced. Get referrals and check for online for reviews.

  • Choose quality materials.

Opting for durable, high-quality materials is key to both the look and longevity of your space. It no only enhances the overall aesthetic but also ensures that your kitchen can withstand daily use. Investing in quality made cabinetry, durable flooring, and reputable brand name faucets can save you money in the long run by reducing the need for repairs or replacements. Plus, high-quality finishes tend to add more value to your home, making them a smart choice for both functionality and resale.
